After capturing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Australia will now tour Sri Lanka. Pat Cummins will not be the captain of Australia on this tour. In his place, Steve Smith will take charge of the team after 7 years. Australia had won 3-1 in the 5-match Test series against India. During this series, Australia’s opening pair could not perform as was expected from them. Nathan McSweeney was first tried as Usman Khawaja’s partner but to no avail. After that, 19-year-old Sam Constas was given a chance to open, who impressed everyone by scoring a half-century in his debut Test. Both Constas and McSweeney have been included in the team selected for Sri Lanka and now it will be interesting to see who among these two batsmen gets the chance to partner Usman Khawaja.

Travis Head may get new responsibility

Chairman of the Selectors Committee, George Bailey said that Australia’s big hitter Travis Head can open the innings in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka and fast learner Sam Constas may also get more opportunities to showcase his talent.

Head wreaked havoc with the bat in the middle order during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar series against India. Head became the highest run-scorer in BGT. His bat scored 448 runs in 9 innings of 5 matches at an average of 56. This included 2 centuries and one half-century.

Many options in opening

Bailey told cricket.com.au that Trav is an option for opening. We have a number of options and there have been discussions about where he could land, and it could depend on that playing XI. He said that he feels that head coach Andrew (MacDonald) and acting captain Steve Smith will take a decision on this after visiting Sri Lanka. If Head gets into the opening slot, then both Kontas and McSweeney may have to sit out.
